Family Support

Dyslexia can impact each family differently. I know what it’s like to see your student struggle with literacy. It’s important for families to know that they can ask questions about how to support their student at home.

What is a Certified Academic Language Practitioner?

being a CALP...

The Academic Language Therapy Association (ALTA) certifies professionals who work with students who have dyslexia. The training to become a Certified Academic Language Practitioner (CALP) requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree and includes 45 classroom hours, 5 demonstrations (observations) and 65 teaching/clinical hours working with students. This training takes approximately one year to complete.

Certified Academic Language Practitioners are trained using multisensory techniques to integrate visual, auditory and motor processes to teach reading, writing and spelling. Instruction is direct, explicit, systematic, and sequential. They incorporate all aspects of the English language including phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics and orthography.  Training includes starting with basic skills such as letter names and sounds and continues through the progression all the way to tackling multisyllabic words.

Certified Academic Language Practitioners are held to a high standard and are required to complete 10 hours of continuing education every year to maintain certification.
